Lelapa AI announces the launch of Inkuba LM 0.4B, the first African language model (LLM) capable of understanding and responding in five African languages: IsiZulu, Yoruba, Hausa, Swahili, and IsiXhosa.

Credo AI announced that it has raised $21 million in new capital from Mozilla Ventures, CrimsoNox Capital, and FPV Ventures with participation from existing investors Sands Capital, Decibel VC, Booz Allen Hamilton, and AI Fund. This brings the company’s total funding raised to $41.3 million.

Trail, a Munich-based technology startup building the copilot for AI governance, announced the successful closure of a €1.45 million pre-seed round. The funding round is led by early-stage investor NP-Hard Ventures with participation from Mozilla Ventures, CapitalT, Common Magic, and various business angels.

Australian AI entrepreneur Jeremy Howard has capped an US$8 million ($12.2 million) angel investment round for his latest startup, Answer.AI. Founded by Brisbane-based Howard and The Lean Startup author Eric Ries, Answer.AI is a research and development lab that hopes to do for AI what Thomas Edison’s invention lab did for electricity.

Flower, in partnership with the CaMLSys lab at the University of Cambridge, has trained for the first time a 1.3 billion parameter LLM using a novel formulation of federated learning methods. The resulting LLM and companion methodology, that we call FlowerLLM, beats the previous record set by Google DeepMind by more than a factor of three and paves the way towards an era of increasingly democratic participation within foundation models.
